Universal Filtration and Pumping Solutions

Anaerobic digestion stands at the forefront of sustainable waste management solutions, converting organic materials into valuable biogas while mitigating environmental impact. Within this innovative process, the integration of hydraulic ram pumps emerges as a pivotal factor for success. In this article, we’ll delve into the essential role that ram pumps play in optimizing anaerobic digestion, and how they contribute to the generation of clean, renewable energy from waste.

Join us as we explore the synergy between anaerobic digestion, ram pumps, and the broader concept of “energy from waste,” unravelling the key benefits and efficiencies they bring to this eco-conscious endeavor.

Maximizing Feedstock Supply with Ram Pumps:

At the heart of anaerobic digestion lies a consistent supply of organic waste materials. Hydraulic ram pumps excel in this aspect by efficiently transferring and lifting feedstock from storage areas to the digestion tanks. This continuous feed ensures that microorganisms within the tank remain active and productive, ultimately leading to optimal biogas production rates.

Efficient Mixing and Homogenization:

For anaerobic digestion to thrive, efficient mixing and homogenization of the organic waste material are paramount. Ram pumps facilitate this crucial process by ensuring an even distribution of microorganisms and nutrients within the digestion tanks. This meticulous blending maximizes contact between the microorganisms and organic matter, resulting in higher biogas production efficiency.

Maintaining Pressure and Flow Rates:

To harness the full potential of anaerobic digestion, precise pressure and flow rates within the digestion tanks are essential. Ram pumps play a critical role in regulating these parameters by delivering feedstock at a controlled rate. This fine-tuned control allows microorganisms to work effectively and consistently, ensuring a steady biogas output.

Harnessing Hydraulic Power for Sustainability:

Ram pumps operate on hydraulic power, harnessing the energy generated by the flowing feedstock to lift and pressurize it. This energy-efficient approach significantly reduces the reliance on external power sources, aligning perfectly with the goal of creating sustainable and eco-friendly anaerobic digestion plants.

Reliability and Low Maintenance:

In the realm of pumping technologies, ram pumps stand out for their simplicity, robustness, and low maintenance requirements. With fewer moving parts compared to other systems, the likelihood of breakdowns is minimized, ensuring uninterrupted feedstock supply. This reliability is paramount for the stability of the anaerobic digestion process and is a significant reduce in breakdowns is widely reported by EMS customers following EMS ram pump installation on site. Check out some of the testimonials from our customers.

Cost-Effectiveness in Implementation:

From an economic standpoint, ram pumps offer a cost-effective solution for anaerobic digestion plants. With relatively low upfront costs and minimal ongoing operational expenses, they present a financially viable option. Their ability to operate efficiently without incurring significant additional costs makes them a strategic choice for energy from waste facilities.

Conclusion

In the dynamic landscape of anaerobic digestion and energy from waste initiatives, hydraulic ram pumps emerge as unsung heroes. Their multifaceted contributions, from ensuring continuous feedstock supply to enhancing mixing efficiency and reducing energy consumption, make them indispensable components of sustainable waste-to-energy endeavors. By harnessing the power of ram pumps, anaerobic digestion plants can reach new levels of efficiency and environmental stewardship, ultimately advancing the transition towards a greener, more sustainable future.

CVR

Currently we have the CVR (Compact Vertical Ram) and the CVR-G, both come with a 7.87” (200mm) ram. The CVR is the smallest of all our pumps and one of the most popular for projects where high pressures aren’t needed. The CVR-G has a few differences which enable it to process more abrasive materials, such as grit and small stones; they are primarily used for transferring sludge to and from primary settlement tanks and de-sludging.

They have a maximum flow rate of up to 37 gal/min (140 liters/min) and can reach up to 58 psi (4 bar).

The CVR is an ideal choice for the following:

Suction of sludge up to 10% dry solids

Flow rate of 37 gal/min (140 liters/min)

Energy efficiency and monitoring

Slow speed operation

CVRD

Our CVRD (Compact Vertical Ram Duplex) range offers all the power of a CVR and more, with two rams that can give twice the flow at a more consistent rate. One ram pulls in as the other is pushing out, giving a more time efficient flow. The CVRD200 has a flow rate of 90 gal/min (340 liters/min) and can reach up to 58 psi (4 bar).

We currently have the CVRD200 and we are in the process of launching our CVRD300 which will be able to process food waste as well as the general grit, sludge and rags contained in many sludges. The CVRD300 can pump up to 237.75 gal/min (900 liters/min) and reach up to 72.5 psi (5 bar).

All of our CVRD’s also come in a G for grit and an F for food application model to suit your requirements, CVRD-G and CVRD-F.

Steel Reinforced Filter Press Plates

Steel Reinforced Polypropylene Filter Plates evolved due to the closing of the old Edwards & Jones, Fletcher, and Mosley plate factories in England and recognizing that there is still a market for filter plates stronger than plastic. We have finalized our filter plate designs for both membrane and recessed chamber in sizes of 1300mm, 1500mm, 2m x 1.5m, and 2m x 2m. All of our plates are interchangeable with the old E&J plates within the same filter press. They can be mixed and matched with no distinguishable difference.

We offer the membrane plates (mix-pack of membrane and companion plate) for filling/pumping pressures to 12 bar (180 psi) and squeeze pressure of 16 bar (232 psi) or more. The major applications of the plates are fibrous sludges, minerals, and compressible clays.

The machined steel body is stress relieved, blasted clean, and coated with epoxy powder coating to insure many years of corrosion protection. The center feed ports are equipped with stainless steel mating flanges to secure the polypropylene membranes from leakage. The four (4) corner filtrate outlets have “sleeved grommets” preventing internal leakage of the filtrate or feed slurry. The perimeter of the filter plate is supplied with stainless steel fasteners securing the polypropylene faces to the steel body plate. The end result is we now have the strongest, most durable filter plate on the world marketplace.

EMS Food Waste Pump

We have brought the EMS food waste ram pump to North America for another customer who is very excited. This food waste pump replaces the Abel pumps which just could not stand up to the abrasive conditions.

This is no baby pump at 3700 Kg (8100 pounds) and 900 liters/min (234 gpm). This pump model comes with a tungsten carbide coated ram, Kevlar impregnated packing and aluminum ball checks with stainless steel seats.

We use the same tungsten carbide ram coatings and Kevlar packing on our grit pumps and grit and rocks play havoc on pumps but we seem to have solved the problem. Our food waste pumps come in both mechanical and hydraulic drive options and in a range of sizes from 60 to 1800 l/m (15 – 475 gpm).

With 35 million tons per year of food waste in the USA alone, more and more installations are learning that progressive cavity, lobe and piston membrane pumps are maintenance nightmares on food waste. We are optimistic more and more of our EMS ram pumps will be put to use.

Emmerich Piston Diaphragm Pump

Emmerich’s competitors technologically speaking are Abel Pumps, Feluwa, and Geho. Each manufacturer have slight differences which we taunt, but in reality they are all excellent pumps. After working with my first Feluwa pump in 1976 feeding a filter press at Sperry Univac in Salt Lake City, I realized that piston membrane pumps are precision designed and manufactured.

Now 40 years later, I appreciate the reliability and durability of these pumps even more. With proper care and maintenance these pumps can last 50 years or more.

Membrane Pump

While each manufacturer has primarily selected several “niches” or target markets, Emmerich has expanded it’s product range to include polypropylene “wet end” pumps for the chemical and corrosive slurries as well as explosion proof designs for hazardous locations. Emmerich has now positioned their piston diaphragm pumps for the full gamut of positive displacement diaphragm pumps applications.
